How it works
Select any text to bring up the formatting menu, then open the AI dropdown for actions that work on your selection. Or type / on an empty line to open the slash menu, where you'll find AI actions that work on your whole note. Either way, the response is written straight into your note.
Actions on selected text
- Spell check - flags and fixes spelling mistakes in the selection
- Fix spelling & grammar - corrects grammar and spelling issues
- Rewrite - rephrases the selection while keeping the meaning
- Make shorter - tightens the selection down to the essentials
- Make longer - expands the selection with more detail
- Translate - translates the selection into another language
- Continue writing - picks up where the selection leaves off
- Ask AI… - type your own instruction for what to do with the selection
Actions on your whole note
- Spell Check - checks the entire note for spelling and grammar issues
- Continue Writing - extends your note from where it currently ends
- Summarize - generates a summary of the note
- Extract tasks - pulls out action items and to-dos from the note
- Suggest tags - recommends tags based on the note's content
- Ask AI… - type your own instruction to run against the whole note
Live streaming
For actions like Continue Writing and custom "Ask AI…" requests, the response streams in word by word as it's generated, so you can watch your note build in real time instead of waiting for the whole result.
Tips
- You can pick which AI model you use, and manage your API keys, from Settings
- Selection actions only appear once you've highlighted text
- Whole-note actions are available any time via the slash menu, no selection needed
Desktop privacy
The desktop app defaults to local Ollama. In that mode, note text stays on your device. If Ollama is not installed or running, local actions are disabled with a clear explanation and an install/start path; Skriuw does not silently switch to a cloud provider.
Cloud providers are bring-your-own-key. Before one can run, desktop settings ask for explicit consent and state that note text leaves your device. You can withdraw that consent by switching back to Ollama; cloud requests stop immediately.
Provider keys and the desktop sync credential are stored in your operating
system's credential store, not in settings.json, backups, or the webview's
local storage. If the credential store is locked or unavailable, cloud AI and
sync stay disabled rather than falling back to plaintext storage.
Why use AI actions?
Instead of switching to a separate chat window to get help with your writing, AI actions work right where your text already lives - highlight, pick an action, and the result lands directly in your note.
